If you invest in startups, you probably already have a [Carta](https://carta.com/) login. When a company issues your shares or SAFE through Carta, the security shows up in your portfolio automatically. That is useful, but it only covers companies that use Carta. Your other checks, SPV interests and fund commitments live somewhere else, often a spreadsheet.

This guide is for investors who want one portfolio across every holding, and for founders deciding which parts of their stack belong in Carta and which belong in Raziel. In many cases the answer is to use both.

## Who this guide is for

- **Angels, syndicate leads and family offices** who use Carta's investor view and hold positions in companies that use other providers or none at all.
- **Founders** who use Carta for cap table administration and want a fundraising pipeline and investor updates without adding another equity contract.

## Why investors add Raziel next to Carta

As of October 2026, Carta is an equity management platform: companies use it to issue shares and options, run SAFE and priced financings, and order 409A valuations, and venture firms use it for fund administration. It offers a free [Launch plan](https://www3.carta.com/equity-management/launch) for startups with under 25 stakeholders and less than $1M raised, plus independent [SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports](https://www3.carta.com/blog/carta-soc-2-report).

The gap for individual investors is coverage. An investor's portfolio on Carta fills in from securities issued through Carta. Carta's support documentation describes [adding non-Carta investments](https://support.carta.com/kb/guide/en/how-to-add-non-carta-investments-to-your-investments-dashboard-tHgkyTTZ0b/Steps/3725304) for its fund administration clients. Raziel lets any investor add any startup, SPV or fund, whether the company uses Carta, another provider or a spreadsheet, and calculates MOIC, IRR, TVPI and DPI from the cash flows you record.

## Step by step: building one portfolio

1. **Download your records from Carta.** Carta's help center explains how to [print or save your securities](https://support.carta.com/kb/guide/en/how-to-print-securities-rjDYrmYgQe/Steps/3802503) from each security's details, and how to [download fund investment documents](https://support.carta.com/kb/guide/en/how-to-access-fund-investment-documents-in-your-personal-portfolio-jfvHNdWO6J/Steps/3724862) from your personal portfolio, including tax documents by year.
2. **Start a 14-day Investor trial.** [Sign up](https://app.raziel.co/sign-up) and create a workspace for your personal portfolio. Add separate workspaces for family or a syndicate if you keep them apart.
3. **Set up your entities.** If you invest through an LLC, a trust or more than one personal account, create each one so every holding sits under the right owner.
4. **Bring in your non-Carta holdings first.** Import the spreadsheet you track them in today, or add each position in a few fields. This is the part Carta's investor view does not show you.
5. **Forward your documents.** Forward or upload SAFEs, purchase agreements, capital account statements and capital call notices. Raziel's [AI Document Import](https://raziel.co/platform/document-import) pulls out the amount, cap, discount and dates and matches each document to the right company or vehicle. AI is optional.
6. **Add your Carta-issued positions.** Use the certificates and documents you saved in step 1 so your whole portfolio sits in one place.
7. **Record rounds as they happen.** When a company raises, enter the new price per share once and Raziel re-marks every position you hold in it. [News & Alerts](https://raziel.co/platform/news-and-alerts) flags rounds on the companies you hold.
8. **Connect a bank account and share.** Connect accounts so cash sits beside your investments, and invite a partner or accountant as an editor or viewer through [Workspaces & Permissions](https://raziel.co/platform/workspaces-and-permissions).

## What to keep in Carta

Keep Carta if your company uses it to issue equity. It is the legal system of record for your cap table, it handles 409A valuations and compliance, and Raziel does not do that work. As an investor, keep your Carta login too: it is where companies send new securities and documents for you to accept. Founders can run their raise in Raziel's [Investor CRM & Pipeline](https://raziel.co/platform/investor-crm) and send [investor updates](https://raziel.co/platform/investor-updates) while Carta stays the record of ownership.

## FAQ

### Does Raziel replace Carta?

Not for equity administration. If your company issues shares and options or needs 409A valuations, Carta does that and Raziel does not. Raziel is for tracking your investments across every company and for running fundraising and investor updates.

### Can I track companies that do not use Carta?

Yes. In Raziel you can add any startup, SPV or fund, import a spreadsheet, or forward documents. For more on the difference between the two kinds of tools, read [cap table vs portfolio tracker](https://raziel.co/learn/cap-table-vs-portfolio-tracker).

### How does Raziel calculate my returns?

From the dated cash flows you record: investments, follow-ons, capital calls and distributions, plus current value. You can check a single position with the free [MOIC calculator](https://raziel.co/tools/moic-calculator) or [XIRR calculator](https://raziel.co/tools/xirr-calculator).

### What does each cost?

As of October 2026, Carta Launch is free for qualifying startups, and paid plan prices are not listed on Carta's public pages. Raziel's Investor plan is $49/month through 30 companies after a 14-day free trial, then $199/month. The Founder plan is free through 100 contacts, then $29/month.
