How to Track PIK Interest on a Private Credit Loan

How to track PIK interest is the coupon ledger you keep after you already own the private credit loan: cash coupon versus PIK coupon, PIK accrued, PIK capitalized (added to principal), cash paid, capitalization dates, remaining principal. It is not a fund-level facility row. Raziel's subscription line tracking page is the capital-call credit line the fund drew against unfunded commitments. This page is the interest the borrower either pays in cash or adds to loan principal under the credit agreement you hold.

This is not legal, tax, or investment advice. Raziel does not provide it. Copy the signed credit agreement and the latest interest notice or loan statement. Do not invent a coupon rate, a PIK percentage, or a tax treatment.

What this ledger is (and is not)

Investopedia (updated May 13, 2026) defines a payment-in-kind (PIK) bond as one that pays interest with additional bonds instead of cash. No cash interest is paid to the bondholder until the bond is redeemed or total principal is repaid at maturity. On coupon dates, the issuer pays accrued interest by issuing additional bonds, notes, or preferred stock. Those are definitions. Your balances come from the credit agreement.

Thompson Coburn LLP (November 8, 2024) describes PIK interest as a mechanism whereby the borrower does not pay cash interest on a loan, but instead adds the interest at an accrual rate to the principal balance. Predominantly, PIK is accrued and added to principal monthly, quarterly, or annually. BlackRock (HPS) uses the same mechanics: PIK is not paid in cash when it accrues; it is added to outstanding principal. Both name three structures: full PIK, split or partial PIK, and toggle PIK. Copy yours. Do not paste a market mix.

Six columns on one loan row

Open one row per loan, or per tranche, after close. Do not collapse two facilities that share a borrower name. Copy each field from the credit agreement and the latest pack. If a field is missing, store that it was missing. A headline yield on the GP portal is not remaining principal.

  • Cash coupon versus PIK coupon. The split for this interest period. Full PIK means cash is zero for that period. Split PIK means both slices exist. Toggle PIK means you store the election actually made. White & Case (September 9, 2024) describes a PIK toggle as the option to add a portion of due interest to loan principal instead of settling it in cash. Your split is the one in the notice.

  • PIK accrued. Interest that has run as PIK as of a statement date and has not yet been added to principal. Date the figure. Accrued is not capitalized.

  • PIK capitalized (added to principal). The amount already added to outstanding principal. Investopedia: additional securities settle the coupon and increase principal. Thompson Coburn: subsequent interest is then calculated on the increased principal. White & Case: once a portion is added to principal, that portion accrues interest. Capitalized PIK is a principal change, not a distribution.

  • Cash paid. Cumulative cash interest actually received. Only the cash slice of a split period belongs here.

  • Capitalization dates. The dates the agreement or the notice adds PIK to principal. Thompson Coburn: predominantly monthly, quarterly, or annually. White & Case: in some jurisdictions (France, Belgium, and Luxembourg) interest can only be capitalised annually for the election to remain valid. Copy your dates.

  • Remaining principal. Outstanding principal after capitalization events and any cash principal paydowns. The next coupon runs on this balance. It is not last quarter's net IRR.

Accrued is not principal until it capitalizes

Carta (December 31, 2025): when a loan includes a PIK structure, the borrower does not make a scheduled cash interest payment. The interest is capitalized, meaning it is added directly to total principal. Next period, new interest is calculated on that larger principal. Accrued PIK that has not yet hit a capitalization date is not yet remaining principal. Do not use an illustration coupon (Investopedia's 9 percent cash plus 6 percent PIK on $10 million, or Thompson Coburn's 8 percent on $100 million) as your rate. Those figures illustrate compounding. Your coupon is in the credit agreement.

Do not mix this clock with a subscription line. If the fund funded the loan by drawing a capital-call facility, your LP cash date is the later call, not the loan closing and not the PIK capitalization date. PIK can still accrete principal on the loan while no LP wire has left. Those are two rows.

IRR needs dated cash; PIK is not a cash coupon until paid

Feed dated cash to an IRR calculator only after you know which dollars were cash coupon, which were principal paydown, and which never left the borrower because they were PIK. PIK is not a cash coupon until paid. A portal yield that mixes PIK accretion with cash received is not the cash series. Remaining principal can grow while cash paid is zero. That growth is a principal mark, not an IRR input. If cash later pays down capitalized PIK, that paydown is cash on the date it hits, tagged as principal, not as a catch-up coupon you invent.

When the ledger holds

The row holds if cash coupon versus PIK coupon is the agreement's split for the period, PIK accrued is dated, PIK capitalized is the amount already added to principal, cash paid is actual cash, capitalization dates are the agreement's, and remaining principal is the post-capitalization balance. It fails when you book PIK as a distribution, skip capitalization dates, compound before the agreement capitalizes, or treat remaining principal as last quarter's net IRR. Raziel can sit those dated cash rows and documents on the investment record: IRR and MOIC, AI ingest of the pack, capital calls. Raziel does not interpret your credit agreement and does not give investment advice. Copy the six columns. Leave the coupon math to the agreement and the notice.
