Comparison

Raziel vs spreadsheets

Most private investors start with a spreadsheet in Excel or Google Sheets: one row per investment, columns for amounts and dates, and formulas for returns. Raziel is built for private markets: startups, SPVs, funds and entities, with founder tools under the same login.

Key differences

What actually sets them apart

  1. Data entry

In a spreadsheet, every round, capital call and distribution is typed in by hand. Raziel lets you forward statements, notices and SAFEs, and its AI records the details against the right holding.

  2. Returns you can trust

Excel’s XIRR handles irregular cash flows, but you build and maintain the formulas. Raziel calculates MOIC, IRR, TVPI and DPI from the cash flows you record, the same way for every position.

  3. Marks that update

A spreadsheet holds the value you last typed. In Raziel, recording a new round re-marks every position in that company, and you get news and alerts on the companies you hold.

  4. Sharing with control

Sharing a spreadsheet shares the whole file. Raziel workspaces have owner, editor and viewer roles, with mandatory multi-factor authentication for every user.

Switching

Moving from spreadsheets to Raziel

Most of the setup is importing what you already have. The Investor plan starts with a 14-day free trial.

  1. Sign up and import the spreadsheet you track your portfolio in today.
  2. Check that each holding landed with the right amounts and dates, and add anything that was missing.
  3. Forward new statements and capital call notices instead of typing them in.
  4. Record each new round once so positions re-mark and returns update automatically.
  5. Invite anyone you used to email the file to as an editor or a viewer.

Raziel vs spreadsheets: questions

Is Raziel better than a spreadsheet for tracking private investments?

For a few positions that rarely change, a spreadsheet works well. Once you hold more startups, SPVs or funds, Raziel saves the retyping: forward statements, record rounds once, and get MOIC, IRR, TVPI and DPI calculated for every position.

Can I import my existing spreadsheet into Raziel?

Yes. Spreadsheet import is one of Raziel’s integrations, so you can bring existing positions over and keep them current from there.

How does Raziel calculate IRR compared with XIRR?

Like XIRR, Raziel uses the dates and amounts of your actual cash flows, so irregular capital calls and distributions are handled. The difference is that you do not have to build, copy or audit the formulas.

Is a spreadsheet free?

Google Sheets is free, and Excel is free on the web and mobile. Desktop Excel comes with Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99/year. Raziel’s Founder plan is free through 100 contacts, and the Investor plan has a 14-day free trial.
